Margit Slachta, the first female member of the Hungarian Parliament, who died in American emigration in 1974, was reburied on Tuesday at the Fiumei street graveyard in Budapest, writes MTI.

At the initiative of the Barankovics Foundation, the remains of Margit Slachta were brought to Hungary on 9 November with the help of the Society of Social Brothers and the Institute of National Heritage.

Cardinal Péter Erdő, the archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, who led the ceremony, said: Margit Slachta "knew and wanted to represent the ideal of Christian love in public, in action, orally and in deed".

During the war, she thoughtfully supported the poor and rescued the persecuted, but he also saw the inhumanity of another dictatorship that began after the war, and was not afraid to raise her voice in the Parliament.

In his speech, Zsolt Semjén emphasized that the task of the current Hungarian state and government is to organize the return of the ashes of Hungarians in foreign lands. “It’s a duty, a drive and a satisfaction,” he noted.
