The first lord mayor of Budapest died 125 years ago

Károly Ráth was the lord mayor of Budapest from the time of the unification of the city, in 1873, and he was re-elected a total of four times. He held this post in the quarter century when the Hungarian capital developed into a metropolis. He witnessed the construction of Andrássy Avenue and Outer Ring Road, and saw how Budapest's famous buildings, public institutions, schools, and hospitals were constructed. He even took part in the millennium celebrations and died as mayor 125 years ago, on 30 July 1897.

Károly Ráth became the first Lord Mayor of the united Budapest in 1873. Although the Lord Mayor was already 52 years old when he took his post, many said he gave his whole life to serving Budapest. Educated as a lawyer, the mayor was extremely popular. He held his position for 24 years and was re-elected at every election he ran in until his death. Despite this, no public space in Budapest bears his name, nor does a statue stand to honour his memory.

An exhibition was opened in János Neumann's former school, the Fasori Lutheran Secondary School, on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the world-famous mathematician's birth. In the exhibition presenting the former Neumann milieu, paintings, graphics, photos, furniture, and objects tell the story of the art-supporting spirit of the noble bourgeois family at the turn of the century.
