Béla Lajta was one of the most brilliant figures in the history of Hungarian architecture, who fortunately was properly appreciated even in his own time, and posterity cherishes his memory with respect. A long series of studies and several books have already been published about his life and work, and three years ago Pestbuda also commemorated the 100th anniversary of his death. Today Hungarians celebrate the anniversary of his birth as he was born 150 years ago. On this occasion, Pestbuda now presents a topic close to his heart, his designs for the former National Theatre.
Archaeologists were able to find the remains of a monastery founded by Béla the 4th at Háros Island

The remains of the Premontre monastery founded in 1264 were found by diver archaeologists along Háros Island. The monastery was built during the time of Béla the 4th and was destroyed during the Turkish era. The supposed location of the building was previously searched by several archaeologists. Many carved stones of medieval origin were found in the debris field, including blocks of blocks and fragments of window frames, but more recent finds were also found.

Among the innovators of Hungarian painting at the turn of the century, we consider Béla Iványi-Grünwald, who was born 155 years ago. He studied at the Mintarajziskola [Design School] on Andrássy Avenue, later becoming a popular and defining figure in Budapest's art life, one of the founders and core members of the Fészek Klub [Nest Club]. He is also the founder of the Nemzeti Szalon [National Salon], an association of artists dissatisfied with official art policy, with its headquarters in Erzsébet Square. When he died at János Hospital in 1940, his contemporaries said goodbye not only to a talented artist but also to an always cheerful social man.
The national center of Catholic Caritas was handed over on Bartók Béla Street

The Catholic Caritas was reorganized after the change of regime, and by 1995 a nationwide network of aid organizations had been established. They are celebrating its 90th anniversary right now. The headquarters of the institution have been in an apartment on Béla Bartók Street in Újbuda since 1990, but these days the aid organization has moved into its own building.
Square near Nyugati Railway Station named after Béla Puczi

The part of Nyugati Square right next to the railway station has newly been named after Béla Puczi, who led Gypsies to defend the Hungarians during the anti-Hungarian pogrom in Târgu Mureş in 1990.

Lajta Béla was one of the most influential Hungarian architects of the first decades of the 20th century. Starting in the footsteps of Ödön Lechner, his art nouveau style grew into a new form and became a forerunner of Hungarian modern architecture. He represented a new approach to the formation of mass while retaining folk-based decorations and the ornamentation of art nouveau, and he connected it to new materials and designed buildings which were monumental in their simplicity. Buildings that have remained beautiful examples of modern urban architecture to the present day.

There is a part of Budapest where a car factory, a barracks, university halls of residence, and the entirety of Hungarian literary life in the inter-war years lived peacefully side-by-side. All within 100 metres of each other. A small section of a wonderful road with wonderful places: the stretch of Bartók Béla Road between Szent Gellért [Saint Gerard] Square and the Körtér.
Béla IV, died 750 years ago, founded Buda but does not even have a memorial plaque in the Castle District

After the Tartar invasion, King Béla IV founded the city that is known today as Buda. He was looking for a place that would be impregnable during a next Mongol attack. He surrounded the plateau of Castle Hill with thick walls, parcelled and populated the area, and built monasteries and churches. Béla IV's Buda still exists today, the castle walls he built, the streets he walked on, the house walls and window frames he could see, the booths he could sit in, but not even a plaque preserves the name of the founder here.
