Fifty years ago: severe water shortages in Budapest
March 30, 2022 at 9:00 AM
As in the current drought, Hungary and Budapest was hit by a significant water shortage fifty years ago, exacerbated by an outdated water supply network and regular pipe ruptures. The situation was so critical in 1971–1972 that the water consumption of industrial plants was restricted and the population felt water shortages, as in many places there was no water flowing from the taps, so for a while the water supply had to be secured by water carts.

January 18, 2022 at 2:00 PM
Two valuable areas, the 2nd district Jegenye Valley and the gallery forest of Óbuda Island has recently been protected. The Jegenye Valley is dominated by the many salamanders that live there and the now almost completely extinct hornbeam-oak forest, but the clean water springs there are also a rare treasure. It is also a rarity, and the 2.5-kilometer-long gallery forest in Óbuda, which is close to nature, is also under special protection.

July 10, 2021 at 10:00 AM
Óbuda Island, also known as Hajógyári Island, has recently shown its more pleasant face: there are no weeks-long events, festivals or pavilions. The area presents a peaceful, so to speak natural side to the visitors, so it is worth reporting on what people can find on the most troubled island of Budapest in "peacetime".

The Flórián shopping centre, then officially called Óbudai Centrum Department Store, was the first real shopping centre in Hungary. The building was handed over 45 years ago. It was built to serve the housing estate of Óbuda and North Buda, and it was so important that even the Roman ruins found here, the remains of the command building of the former legionary camp were sacrificed for it.

May 20, 2021 at 10:00 AM
Hadrian was one of the most successful emperors of the Roman Empire. Once, he was the governor of the province of Pannonia. His governor's palace, built in the 2nd century, was in the settlement of Aquincum. The remains of the former huge building were discovered 170 years ago when the Óbuda shipyard expanded its site. The ruins have since been excavated several times on today's Hajógyári (Shipyard) Island.
Water meters were installed 100 years ago to reduce water waste
August 25, 2020 at 1:00 PM
It is hard to imagine today that drinking water from the tap was not always a basic service. Mihály Kajlinger, born 160 years ago, has indisputable merit in the organisation and construction of Budapest's water supply. His name is associated with the plans for the capital's large sewage pumping station, sewerage, and water supply network, but water consumption meters were also introduced at his suggestion to curb water waste. His main work, the waterworks of Káposztásmegyer, was the most beautiful and modern waterworks in contemporary Europe.
