The first velocipedes on the streets of Pest-Buda caused a great sensation in the late 1860s. By the 1880s, the bicycle had conquered Budapest: associations, cycling schools were formed, social trips, parades and competitions were organized. The capital's postal servants rode velocipedes, and the army also used the vehicles. A World Cycling Championship was also held in the capital. In 1928 the Millenáris Velodrome was the most modern and fastest cycling track in Europe.

An agreement detailing the renovation of the Pest Embankment has been signed by representatives of the Government and the capital. According to the plans, a new promenade and green areas will be created from Kossuth Lajos Square to the Bálna, the roundabout on Széchenyi Square will be removed, the tracks of tram line 2 and Közraktár Street will also be renewed.

Among the noble families of Hungary, the Széchenyi's particularly contributed to the growth of Budapest. Works associated with István Széchenyi, the Chain Bridge and the building of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences are emblematic sites of the city, and his father, Ferenc Széchényi, can be tied to important institutions such as the National Széchényi Library and the Hungarian National Museum. The two respected institutions, which were one at the time, were founded in 1802 by Count Ferenc Széchényi as the third national collection in Europe. Today is the 200th anniversary of his death.
