Renovation of the Pest embankment to on 7 June that of Blaha Lujza Square in early July

Two major reconstructions in Budapest will begin this summer. In a week and a half, the renovation of a section of the lower embankment of Pest between Margit Bridge and Parliament will begin. The renovation of Blaha Lujza Square is scheduled to start in July, but according to simpler designs than previously planned.

Two important public areas of Budapest will be renewed from nearly HUF 5 billion over the next year and a half. Work on Id. Antall József Embankment will begin on 7 June 2021, while the renovation of Blaha Lujza Square will start a few weeks later.

After about fifty years, one of the most significant and busiest squares in the country will be given a new character. The renovation was commissioned by the Budapest City Council, in the investment of BKK, with professional support from the 7th and 8th Districts. The works will cost 3.47 billion HUF. The government will provide 1 billion HUF which must be used before the end of 2021. Renovation work is expected to begin in mid-summer and early July at the earliest, following the successful completion of the procurement process.

Pedestrian-friendly meeting places will be created on Blaha Lujza Square, including shady rest areas, green areas in a raised bed, and a water game will be created in place of the parking spaces. The memorial stone and the iconic mushroom fountain will also be renewed.

However, the building of an oval pavilion for cultural purposes, which was planned in 2019, will be implemented in a simpler form. The construction of a roof over the Rákóczi Road bus stops has also been delayed, and the underpass will be renovated but not widened. The tree line planned for Rákóczi Road will also not be planted. The valuable ash trees on the square will be protected.

Following the renovation, Blaha Lujza Square will be made more accessible with new pedestrian crossings.

The pedestrian-friendly renewal of the embankments will begin with the section between Kossuth Square and Margit Bridge in Pest. The banks of the Danube will be reborn as a promenade as a result of the project. Unused road pavings are to be removed and trees planted along the path.

The steps to the shoreline will remain remains, but the retaining wall of the Garibaldi Street ramp will be moved inwards. The World Heritage protected landscape will remain unchanged. In addition, the shoreline will become greener as 35 trees will be planted during the investment. The reconstruction of the embankment will cost about 1.5 billion HUF.

According to the plans, the renewed id. Antall József Embankment will be completed by the end of 2021, and Blaha Lujza Square by the end of 2022.
