The demolition of the former diplomatic residence, the later Burg Hotel, was completed this week in the Szentháromság Square in Buda Castle, leaving only piles of rubble. The building, designed by György Jánossy and László Laczkovics and completed in 1981 is planned to be replaced by a house that will evoke the exterior of the buildings originally demolished after World War II.

According to a new draft, the Budapest local council would place mainly the residential houses built between 1945 and 1980, including residential houses in Budavár, two housing estates, two former party houses and a workers' hostel. The proposal for the Budapest General Assembly lists the buildings to be preserved in nine pages, the nearly 180-item list includes the Hilton Hotel in Budavár, the main building of the Southern Railway Station, and a number of modern buildings in several districts, including downtown after the war.

A house, respecting the historical past, which closely matches the image of the Castle District and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, will be the new conference centre of the Pallas Athene Domus Meriti Foundation in Szentháromság Square, said Ádám Reisz, head of Rapa Architects, the designers of the building. He also explained that the starting point for the reconstruction of the facade was the pre-war state, as there is a wealth of visual information available about this age on which they could based it.

The most significant hotel in Buda Castle is undoubtedly the Hilton. This is explained not only by the world-famous brand, but also by the size and panoramic location of the building. Barely a hundred metres away, however, the small Burg Hotel held the competition with its big rival for two decades. Like Hilton, it is a modern building as well, its predecessors destroyed in World War II. But now the area is once again undergoing a change: a partial demolition permit has been issued for the building, and work has already begun on the interiors.

Today, the Parliament passed a bill on the transfer of state real estate. The Foundation for Educational, Cultural and Scientific Education (Polgári Művelődésért, Oktatási, Kulturális és Tudományos Alapítvány) will receive the Váry Szabó Mansion, while the organisers of the Erzsébet Camps will receive the 46 hectare plot of the former Csillebérc Pinoeer Camp.

The former state-owned building of Burg Hotel on Szentháromság Square in the 1st District will be purchased by the Pallas Athéné Domus Meriti Foundation of the Central Bank of Hungary. The hotel closed in 2019, and the building has been vacant ever since.
Stunning house with famous underground safe renovated in Buda Castle

The house under 72 Úri Street and its underground tunnels once housed Hungary's gold reserves during the second world war and 600–700 people alongside them. In the 1950s the location was used to control the electrical grid. The house has newly been restored to its original late-baroque design as the educational centre of the Hungarian National Bank.

István Benedek, the renowned 20th-century writer, doctor, psychiatrist and public figure was the son of the great Székely storyteller Elek Benedek, and both of them remain household names in many Hungarian families to the present day. Beyond his books, István Benedek is memorialised by a Székely gate that he carves himself, and erected before the villa he lived in from 1957. Interestingly, the house itself was built by the well-known bookbinder Nándor Gottermayer.

The exterior designed by Albert Kálmán Kőrössy has remained an art nouveau villa, while the interior has become a modern space, equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Build as a residential building, it later became a language examination centre, and now houses a centre for education and innovation.
