The Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport is opening the new exhibition to commemorate two-hundred years of boat travel in Budapest from the earliest attempts to the present day – writes the MTI.

The Carolina, the first steamboat suitable for transporting passengers, began operation between Buda, Pest and Óbuda in the summer of 1820. This can be considered the beginning of boat transportation in Budapest – writes the press release published by the Museum of Science, Technology and Transport.

"The 200th anniversary of boat travel as public transportation in Budapest is a great opportunity to draw attention to the connection of Budapest and the Danube, showcase how the cityscape of the capital changes, and how the role of shipping evolved alongside it. Due to the current pandemic, the exhibition will remain open next year as well, to ensure those visited will be able to visit it" - said Dávid Vitézy, Director of the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport.

The photographs and boat models on display evoke the varied connections of Budapest and the Danube and examine the effects that boat transport has had on the capital. Visitors will also learn what the famed "propellers" known from literary works were and also what the most common boats were in Budapest, and how tourism has changed boat transportation.
