The Hungarian writer, poet and journalist, Sándor Márai (born Sándor Grosschmid, Kassa [present-day Košice, Slovakia], 11 April 1900 – San Diego, 21 February 1989) was one of the most respected writers of his time by the 1930s. HE left Hungary in 1948. The communist dictatorship of the time systematically pushed his works from Hungarian literary life. The true publication of his works in Hungary could only begin in the 1990s, after his death. His work was honoured with a posthumous Kossuth Prize in 1990.

In the constant hustle and bustle of the Egyetem Square in Pest, the students may not even notice the monument that decorates the short section of wall between the church and the central building of ELTE. However, it commemorates their predecessors, the heroes who fought for their country in World War I, and those who heroically helped them. The first design of the dramatically collapsing soldier was born in 1928, ninety-five years ago.
