On the morning of 16 December, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ceremoniously handed over the key to the Kádár villa in the 2nd District of Budapest to Ignatius Aphrem II, Syrian Orthodox Patriarch. Thus, the former residence of the anti-clerical one-party state will be used by the persecuted Christian Church – Bertalan Havasi, Deputy Secretary of State for the Prime Minister's Press Office, informed the MTI.

In addition to the Hungarian Prime Minister and the Syrian Patriarch, the friendly meeting was attended by Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Mosul Nicodemus, Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Damascus Timotheus, Zsolt Semjén, Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State Azbej Tristan. Bertalan Havasi noted that the Hungarian state has been providing life-saving assistance to Christian communities persecuted for the past four years because of their beliefs through the  Hungary Helps Program. Hungarian support has led to the successful completion of humanitarian projects organized by the Syrian Orthodox Church in Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon, which have supported the long-term survival of these communities in their homeland.
