The Puskás Arena has been listed among the candidates for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture. Named after the architect Mies van der Rohe, the award is given to projects completed in Europe that are defining works of modern urban development through their architectural quality and cultural significance. Puskás Arena, designed by Középülettervező Zrt. (KÖZTI), is the most modern multifunctional sports facility in Central Europe and can house the largest crowd in the region, reads KÖZTI's announcement.

Named after Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the award was first presented in 1988 to recognize the most outstanding European projects in contemporary architecture. Designs by renowned architects such as Peter Zumthor, Zaha Hadid or David Chipperfield  have won the recognition of the independent panel of judges

Puskás Arena has progressed to the second round of the selection process, officially making it a candidate. In the case of the Mies van der Rohe Award, an official nomination is recognised similarly to how Oscar nominations are also respected.

In the creation of Puskás arena, sixty-year-old architectural values were mixed with the modern expectations of the 21st century. With its height of 52 metres, Puskás Arena has become a characteristic element of the Budapest cityscape. The 208,000-square-metre stadium opened in 2019 after 3 years of planning and 3 years of construction.

The award ceremony of the Mies van der Rohe Prize is preceded by a lengthy selection process. This year the schedule has changed due to the pandemic. According to the award calendar, candidates for the first round will be announced at the beginning of this year (projects built between 2018 and 2020), and candidates for the second phase will be announced in September 2021 (projects built between 2020 and 2021).

In recent years, a number of Hungarian buildings have been nominated for the award, raising the profile of contemporary architecture in Hungary. This is not KÖZTI's first nomination, Papp László Sports Arena was also listed among official candidates.

Középülettervező Zrt. (KÖZTI) is the oldest architectural firm in Hungary and has long-standing traditions. The reconstruction of the Castle District, Puskás Arena, as well as the Skycourt and T2B piers of Liszt Ferenc Airport, are among the company's most important projects.
