In preparation for the renovation of the Citadel, a condition survey and comprehensive archaeological research have been carried out. In the process, several valuable finds were unearthed, including Roman and Turkish coins, the foundations of the 19th century Csillagda ('observatory') and a World War I anti-aircraft cannon base, a rarity throughout Europe.

Várkapitányság announced that as the finds were moved to safety, the reconstruction of the former fortress began. In the first phase, the reconstruction of the outer walls and the landscaping of the inner courtyard will be carried out.
In doing so, a spectacular flight of stairs will be created on the east side, allowing visitors to approach the fort from the Statue of Liberty easily. A 6,000-square-foot park and a pond will be created in the inner courtyard. The 35-meter-high national flag will also be located here.
In addition, the walls of the fort are to be opened at several points. This simplifies the passage between the two sides of Gellért Hill. On the other hand, the destruction of the walls symbolically continues the 1899 process, which was fulled by public hatred of the fortress.

New observation decks are also being built at the Citadel. The northern bastion will look down on Erzsébet Bridge and the Pest side. The eastern terrace will offer views of Szabadság Bridge, the southern bastion of Kelenföld. The roof terrace of the cannon building will offer a panorama of Margit Island, The Royal Palace of Buda Castle and Széna Square.

In the second phase of the investment, a spectacular exhibition entitled The Bastion of Freedom will be set up in the cannon tower, presenting the Hungarian nation's struggles for freedom.
