Plans are for passengers to return to the main hall of Nyugati Railway station at the beginning of the next school year.

Soon after the completion of the new roof structure covering the hall of the Station, specialists will also construct the external scaffolding of the cash register building, and the renovation of the roof above the fast-food restaurant will also begin. They added that from Saturday, the fast-food restaurant opening from Teréz körút will be temporarily closed during the renovation of the roof structure. Work will be completed by the end of the summer.

The restoration of the decorative towers facing the track entrance has been completed. The decorative windows installed and the old artificial slate covering replaced with natural, anthracite-coloured slate. The crown on the facade of the roof structure has been painted the same colour as the steel structure, the statement noted.

Plaster repairs are underway, and the facade being painted. The doors and windows will be modernised, and the clocks on the glass wall towards Teréz Boulevard and the facade on Eiffel Square will also be renewed. In addition to the listed works, MÁV is carrying out further development to improve the passenger experience.

In the station underpass, passenger areas will be renewed, including a complete renovation of the lighting system, the elimination of water problems and the reconstruction of the ceiling. To ensure ease of access, the pedestrian underpass of the railway station and the glass waiting area opposite the platforms used by the Vác lines will also be replaced. A new ramp will be built for ease of access to the train station from Teréz Boulevard.

In the hall, a so-called tactile guide is being installed based on plans by the Hungarian National Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired. Its placement will be implemented in several phases and is expected to be completed in 2022.

Designed by the Austrian architect August de Serres and the office of Gustave Eiffel in Paris, which later became world-famous for the Eiffel Tower, Nyugati Railway Station opened in 1877 and was last restored between 1978 and 1988 and has not undergone major renovations since.
