Today, the General Assembly of the Capital has decided to withdraw from the 2009 contract for the construction of the Gellért Hill cable car and the planned bus parking lot at the lower station. The proposal was adopted by the panel with 17 votes in favor, 6 against and 1 abstention.

At its meeting on 27 November, 2008, the Budapest General Assembly decided to build the two facilities with Rác Sikló Kft. (After the name change, Gellérthegyi Sikló Kft.) and in the 1st District.

The General Assembly today justified its withdrawal from the agreement on the grounds that more than thirteen years had passed since the entry into force of the contract, without any substantial construction work under the contract and due to deviations from the original technical content of the contract. it is no longer possible for reasons of interest to the investor.

"In view of all this, as well as the significant change in the legal environment and the disruption of the economic balance of the contract, the local council of Budapest no longer has an interest in maintaining the contract," the resolution reads.

As we wrote , the construction of the cable car from Tabán to Gellért Hill was also supported by the government. According to the government decision published in the Hungarian Gazette in July 2020, the funicular is needed because it provides environmentally friendly and barrier-free transport, also triggering tourist bus traffic. In addition, the government agreed on the need for a comprehensive, public renewal of Gellért Hill City Park to develop it into a leisure park.

Gábor Bagdy (Fidesz - KDNP) spoke at today's general meeting that all the conditions should be examined before making a decision, because there are huge financial risks in accepting the proposal submitted to Wednesday's meeting. He suggested examining the legal and economic consequences of the decision and consulting with the investor. The biggest loss from the decision is that the glider will not be built, he said.

Mayor Gergely Karácsony spoke about the fact that the capital is exposed to a lot of environmental risks in the investment, and with the changes made in the meantime, the visual investment would only further burden Gellért Hill, because it would not replace the tourist buses.
