The release details that renovation on the southern section of the line began in April 2019.

As a result, the stations Határ út, Pöttyös utca, Ecseri út and Népliget have received a new, modern design, been made more comfortable, safer, and not only brighter, but more energy efficient, due to their new LED-based lighting.

However, the most important elements of the reconstruction are those less visible to the general public but vital to safe transportation. The entire track infrastructure, off-station spaces, signals, safety and ventilation systems have been replaced, as well as the passenger information solution.

Work to ensure the stations are accessible to those with limited mobility are ongoing

The release highlights that the modernisation of the southern section has not been completed. Work to ensure that all stations on the M metro line are easily accessible by all will continue until the end of 2021. BKK added that original plans had only included improving the accessibility of certain stations. However, a resolution passed by the General Assembly of the City Council on 19 April 2018 expanded the plans and ordered that all stations on the line be made accessible to those with limited mobility.

Lift installations have been completed at Határ út and Népliget stations and will be opened to the general public soon. Similar work at Pöttyös utca and Ecseri út stations is currently in a preparatory phase.

Replacement bus services remain

On the afternoon of 22 October 2020, the M3 metro will again run along the entire line. However, previously closed stations of the central section (Arany János utca, Ferenciek tere, Corvin-negyed, Semmelweis Klinikák) will remain closed. Trains will drive through these without stopping, and access will be provided by replacement bus services, including the M30 bus between Népliget and Kálvin Square.

Alternative bus transport routes on the southern section will remain available.

Renovation of the central section of the metro line is to begin shortly. BKK will provide information on the schedule and service changes at a later date.
