Developments defining the traffic of the 2nd, 3rd and 13th Districts can begin this summer. Thanks to the investment, conditions for bicycle traffic will improve, and pedestrians will also be able to walk in orderly and safe conditions. The public procurement procedure for the construction has started, the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) says in its announcement.

They explained: during planning, it was important to create safe connections for cyclists and that the realised routes connect to the current and planned sections of the network. It is important that everyday administration, going to work, kindergarten or school by bicycle is available to all age groups, and that, as a result of developments, more and more people decide to cycle - even connect it with public transport.

According to the BKK announcement, the project area covers the area bounded by Bécsi Road – Frankel Leó Road – the Outer Ring Road – Lehel Street – Róbert Károly Boulevard – Dagály Promenade – Árpád Bridge – Vörösvári Road. The design and licensing process have been completed, and the call for tenders for the public procurement procedure for the construction was published on 20 January 2023.

After the successful public procurement procedure, construction can be expected to start this summer. The exact technical content is determined by the BKK after the price offers are received, as well as which elements can and cannot be implemented if the offers are higher than the available funds, they write.

The announcement reads that thanks to the planned interventions, the main roads will become safe for cycling (Árpád Fejedelem Road, Vörösvári Road, Bogdáni Road); the number of reduced-traffic zones in Inner-Óbuda may increase; and the implementation of new junction crossings or the modification of existing ones can significantly reduce the dangers of road traffic on Váci Road and Vörösvári Road intersections.

In addition, several one-way streets can be opened to two-way bicycle traffic, and new bicycle stands will be established at popular destinations - educational, administrative, commercial, sports and medical institutions.

The investment is part of a larger development program. With the support of the European Union, within the framework of the Competitive Operational Programme (VEKOP), a total of 8.22 billion HUF will be allocated to traffic safety and bicycle-friendly developments in Budapest. In the 2nd, 3rd and 13th Districts, the BKK can use 991 HUF million in gross support, the BKK says in its announcement.
