Pincékben élt a népesség jelentős része a városegyesítés előtt Pest-Budán

Volt egy népszámlálás 1870-ben Magyarországon, éppen 150 évvel ezelőtt. Ez hihetetlenül érdekes képet fest a városegyesítés előtt álló Pestről és Budáról. Akkor alig 200 ezren éltek a pesti oldalon, és közel 54 ezren a budain, de 15 ezren pincékben laktak, 13 ezren pedig legalább tíz másik emberrel osztoztak szobájukon. Tudjuk, hány orvos, hány író, hány tanító, hány hajadon, hány elvált nő lakott a városban, de azt is, hogy 1870-ben ketten is meghaladták a 100 éves életkort a rohamos fejlődésnek indult Pest-Budán. Különleges idők voltak, a nyomor is jelen volt, de ekkor kezdtek el épülni azok a díszes neoreneszánsz házak, amelyeket ma is csodálunk.
Life underground – Significant population of Pest and Buda lived in cellars before the unification of the cities

A census was conducted in Hungary in 1870, 150 years ago. It paints a stunning picture of Buda a Pest before the two cities were unified. Barely 200,000 people lived on the Pest side, and nearly 54 thousand on the Buda side. 15-thousand people lived in cellars, and 13,000 shared their rooms with at least ten other people. The census details how many doctors, writers, teachers lived in the cities, as well as how many unmarried or divorced women called the city home. Two centenarians lived in the city that was experiencing a massive development boom. It was a unique time, in which poverty and grandeur coexisted, and when the Renaissance revival homes so loved to this day were built.

Több mint 50 évig volt Magyarország nádora. Amikor Firenzében nevelkedett, még nem gondolhatta, hogy egyszer a legmagyarabb Habsburgnak nevezik. József nádor csak 19 éves volt, amikor 225 évvel ezelőtt ünnepélyes keretek között bevonult a magyar fővárosba. Itt rendezte be az életét, itt élt feleségeivel, gyermekeivel, itt halt meg, földi maradványai ma is a Budavári Palota kriptájában találhatók. Népszerűségét annak köszönheti, hogy kiemelt figyelmet fordított Buda és Pest felvirágoztatására.
The most Hungarian Habsburg moved to Buda 225 years ago

Eventually serving as Palatine of Hungary for over 50 years, the young prince being raised in Florence would never have been expected to later be known as the Most Hungarian Habsburg. Palatine Joseph was only 19 when he moved to Budapest with much ceremony 225 years ago. He settled in the country, lived here with his wife and children, died here and was buried in the crypt of the Royal Palace in Buda Castle. His popularity was founded on the attention he paid to the prosperity of Buda and Pest.
Duna, Tisza, Dráva, Száva: felújítják a belváros legszebb díszkútját

Van egy gyönyörű díszkút a belvárosban, amelyet Ybl Miklós tervezett, és Magyarország egykori négy legnagyobb folyóját, a Dunát, a Tiszát, a Drávát és a Szávát ábrázolja. Eredetileg nem ide készült: a Kálvin téren állították fel 1883-ban, ám a háborús pusztításban súlyosan megrongálódott. Szerencsére 1959-ben újra felállították ezt a szemet gyönyörködtető alkotást, igaz, nem a korábbi helyén, hanem a mai Erzsébet téren, és a szobrokból nem az eredetieket, hanem a másolatukat, amelyeket viszont nem a világégés, hanem a járókelők bántalmaznak néha, így esett, hogy letörött Száva lábfeje. Most azonban az egész alkotás felújításával azt is újrafaragják.
Danube, Tisza, Drava, Sava – Beautiful fountain in Budapest city centre to be renovated

A beautiful fountain can be found in the centre of Budapest. Designed by Miklós Ybl, it depicts what were once the four largest rivers of Hungary: the Danube, the Tisza, the Drava and the Sava. Originally erected on Kalvin Square in 1883 it was severely damaged in the Second World War. A copy of the fountain and its statues were later erected on Erzsébet Square. Sadly, these were damaged, not by armed conflict but simply passers-by, leading to the foot of the Sava figure being broken off – a fault that will also be repaired with the complete renovation of the fountain.

The renovation of the Art Nouveau palace under 46 Benczúr Street has been completed. The building will serve as the headquarters of the Imre Kertész Institute which manages the literary legacy of the Noble laureate, and János Sziveri, and parts of the legacies of Arthur Koestler, György Petri and János Pilinszky.

A Duna-korzót egykor számos legendás, rég eltűnt épület szegélyezte. Ilyenek voltak többek közt a Redoute, az Angol Királynő Szálló, a Lloyd-palota és a Ritz Szálló. A sok pompás, hatalmas palota mellett állt itt egy apró kis épület is, a Hangli kioszk. A vendéglátóhely nevét Hangl Márk osztrák származású, fiatalon Budapestre került vendéglősről kapta, akit maga Deák Ferenc segített hozzá közbenjárásával, hogy kioszkot létesíthessen a Duna-parton. A Hangli kioszk 1870-től állt a Pesti Vigadó előtt, míg a II. világháború végnapjaiban el nem pusztult sok más értékünkkel együtt.

The Danube Promenade was once lined with several almost legendary buildings. These included the Redoute, the Queen of England Hotel, the Lloyd Palace and the Ritz Hotel. Alongside the grand palaces stood a small building, the Hangli Kiosk. The restaurant was named after its owner, Mark Hangl, an Austrian-born restaurant owner who came to Budapest at a young age, and who was helped by Ferenc Deák himself, in opening the kiosk. The Hangl Kiosk stood in front of the Pest Vigadó from 1870 until it was lost in the end days of the Second World War, alongside so many other beauties.

Megújult a városmajori Kistemplom, a rekonstrukció során fejújították a tetőszerkezetet, a homlokzatot és a belső teret. Az Árkay Aladár által tervezett épület tíz évig szolgált templomként, később a közösségi élet színtere lett.

The renovation of the Heart of Jesus Church in Városmajor has been completed. The façade, interior and roof structure were replaced during the reconstruction. Designed by Aladár Árkay, the church served as a hall of worship for ten years and later became a scene of local community life.

A Margit híd építésekor még nagy vitát váltott ki, hogy vezessenek-e síneket át a hídon. A Rákóczi hídon is csak 20 évvel a híd átadása után indult meg a villamosközlekedés. A Galvani úti hídra pedig az első körben nem is terveztek villamosközlekedést. Ám napjainkban biztosnak tűnik, hogy még évtizedekig utazhatunk villamossal Pestről Budára.
A debate raging since the 19th century: Trams on Budapest bridges

The question of running tracks across Margaret Bridge lead to a major debate during its construction, while trams only started running on Rákóczi bridge 20 years after its construction. Original plans for the bridge to be constructed near Galvani Street did not allocate rooms for trams. Nevertheless, it seems certain that guided transportation connections between Buda and Pest will remain for decades to come.

Erre az évre esett az akkori uralkodó, Ferenc József negyvenéves uralkodói jubileuma is, és az ennek emléket állító törvény kimondta, hogy újból fel kell építeni azt a templomot, amelyet egykor Szent István király Óbuda határában Árpád fejedelem temetési helye fölé emelt. A templom építésére Schulek Frigyes kapott megbízást.

Following the Hungarian National millennium of 1896, the country celebrated another millennium in 1907: the one-thousand-year anniversary of the death of Grand Prince Árpád, the ruler who led the conquest of the Carpathian Basin. Furthermore, the current ruler, Franz Joseph, also celebrated the 40th anniversary of his rule in the same year. A law passed to commemorate this double millennium stated that the Church built by King Saint Stephen, which had once stood on the outskirts of Óbuda where Prince Árpád was believed to be buried, should be rebuilt. Frigyes Schulek was commissioned to design the building.

Ma éppen 110 éve, hogy ünnepélyes keretek között felavatták a budai János-hegy csúcsát koronázó Erzsébet-kilátó épületét. A mészkőből épült lépcsőző, kerek, hófehér kilátó, azóta a budai hegyek páratlan és meghatározó eleme lett, miután a város nagy részéről látható. Az eredetileg csúcsíves kilátó mai képét végül Schulek Frigyesnek köszönhetjük. Az évforduló emlékére több érdekes képet és történetet gyűjtöttünk össze a kilátóról.
Queen Consort Elizabeth and the most beautiful lookout tower in Budapest

The Elizabeth Lookout Tower atop János Hill in Budapest was opened with much ceremony 110 years ago. The tiered, cylindrical tower of snow-white limestone has since then become an unmatched staple of the Buda Hills, as it is visible from large swathes of the city. The present form of the lookout tower should be attributed to Frigyes Schulek. To honour the tower's anniversary, we have collected various images and stories from its past.

Megújult az V. kerületi Egyetemi Kisboldogasszony-templom. A barokk épületben restaurálták a szobrokat, felújították a sekrestyét, kicserélték a padlóburkolatot és korszerűsítették a fűtési és elektromos rendszert és kijavították a toronysisak rézburkolatát.

The University Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the 5th District has been renovated. As part of the process the statues of the baroque building were restored, its sacristy renovated, the floor tiles replaced, the heating and electrical system modernised and the copper cladding of the spires repaired.

In the constant hustle and bustle of the Egyetem Square in Pest, the students may not even notice the monument that decorates the short section of wall between the church and the central building of ELTE. However, it commemorates their predecessors, the heroes who fought for their country in World War I, and those who heroically helped them. The first design of the dramatically collapsing soldier was born in 1928, ninety-five years ago.
